There are many factors that lead to heart disease and the entire body is involved. Dr. Campbell-McBride tells us that the “body functions as a whole. Everything in it is connected, interacting with each other and influencing each other. A well-functioning gut with healthy gut flora holds the roots of our health. And just as a tree with sick roots will not thrive, the body cannot thrive without a well-functioning digestive system.”

We keep this system healthy by avoiding the things that destroy it. Things like sugars, processed carbohydrates, hydrogenated oils and trans fatty acids, stress, chemical toxins and inactivity. We keep it healthy by eating whole, natural foods from animals that are well fed and taken care of, and by consuming fruits and vegetables grown organically and sustainably, and by adhering to the ways of our ancestors that encourages fermenting and sprouting to aid in healthy digestion.

I thoroughly enjoyed reading this book and greatly benefitted from the information contained therein.
Dr. Mark Hyman has done an excellent job of providing a vast amount of information in a clear and engaging format. He deftly states what the so-called experts in the field have gotten right and where they’ve missed the mark. Basing his findings on science and research as well as his own patient’s experiences, Dr. Hyman explains how food affects our bodies both negatively and positively, while focusing on food’s medicinal power and its ability to prevent, treat and reverse disease.
I would highly recommend this book to everyone interested in better eating and health.  It is informative, easy to read and follow, and supplies everyone with what they need to know when bombarded with the numerous diets and conflicting information out there. Dr. Hyman not only answers the question “wtf should I eat” but also why and how.
